Michelin Keys 2026: the 39 key hotels in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Finland

Scandiweekends redaktion · 16 October 2026

Michelin has awarded this year's hotel keys. 39 hotels in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Finland received one or two – and the map looks very different from country to country. In Norway, the keys are at the fjords, in Sweden almost exclusively in Stockholm.

For a century, Michelin has awarded stars to restaurants. Since 2024, the guide has done the same for hotels, but with keys: one, two, or three. Inspectors assess the entire stay – the architecture, service, the personality of the house, how well it belongs where it is, and what the guest gets for their money. It is not luxury that is rewarded, and this is evident on the list. Several of the Nordic key hotels are small family-owned houses in areas few tourists seek out.

The first keys in the Nordics were awarded in October 2025. In this year’s selection, released on September 18, 39 hotels in Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Finland have at least one key: 16 in Norway, 11 in Sweden, 9 in Denmark, and 3 in Finland. Four have two. None has three.

Two keys: two capital classics and two fjord hotels

Half of the top tier is expected. Grand Hôtel is located by the water opposite the Royal Palace in Stockholm, and Hotel d'Angleterre at Kongens Nytorv in Copenhagen with the star restaurant Marchal on the ground floor. Both have been their cities' go-to addresses for over a hundred years.

The other half is more unexpected – and for those looking for weekend destinations, significantly more interesting. Storfjord Hotel is built of timber with a turf roof and is located on a slope above Storfjorden outside Ålesund. Walaker Hotel in Solvorn by Lustrafjorden has been run by the same family since 1690, making it Norway's oldest family hotel. It has around twenty rooms, a garden with lilacs and fruit trees sloping down towards the fjord, and a four-course dinner served at the same time every evening. A short ferry ride away is Urnes Stave Church, which is on UNESCO's World Heritage list.

Norway: the keys are by the water

No country in the Nordics has more key hotels than Norway, and most are far from the cities. Hotel Union Øye is located right at the end of Hjørundfjorden. Juvet Landscape Hotel in Valldal has rooms with glass walls overlooking the forest, and Elva Hotel is in Skulestadmo, just outside Voss. In Ålesund, Hotel Brosundet has one key, and in the archipelago around Bergen, there are two more: Lilløy Lindenberg on Herdla and Beckerwyc House in Bekkjarvik. Further north awaits Manshausen, a small island in Nordland with cabins by the sea, and Nusfjord Village & Resort, an old fishing village in Lofoten.

The cities also get their share. Amerikalinjen, Hotel Continental, and Sommerro each have one key in Oslo. In Trondheim, Britannia Hotel has one, with the star restaurant Speilsalen in the building, and in Stavanger, Eilert Smith Hotel has one. The manor Boen Gård just outside Kristiansand completes the list.

Sweden: one city and one river

In Sweden, the map looks very different. Ten of the eleven keys have gone to Stockholm: Grand Hôtel, Ett Hem, Villa Dagmar, Villa Dahlia, Stockholm Stadshotell, Nobis Hotel, Lydmar Hotel, Bank Hotel, Hotel Frantz, and Ruth. The eleventh went to Arctic Bath in Harads, about an hour's drive from Luleå Airport, where the rooms and spa float on the Lule River.

The countryside is included in the Michelin guide, but it received no keys. Treehotel, ICEHOTEL, Copperhill Mountain Lodge, Steam Hotel, and Görvälns Slott are all selected but without keys. Thus, those wishing to stay at a Swedish key hotel must practically choose between a weekend in Stockholm and a trip to Lapland.

Denmark: Copenhagen – and two reasons to leave the city

Seven of Denmark’s nine key hotels are located in or just outside Copenhagen. In addition to d'Angleterre, they include Hotel Sanders, Nimb, Nobis Hotel Copenhagen, 1 Hotel Copenhagen, 25hours Hotel Paper Island, and Park Lane Copenhagen in Hellerup, north of downtown. The two remaining are those that entice for a true weekend getaway. Allinge Badehotel is located on Bornholm's northern coast, and Falsled Kro is an old inn by the water on southwestern Funen, known for its cuisine.

Finland: three keys, three totally different journeys

Finland only has three key hotels, but they point in three different directions. Waldorf Astoria is located in the heart of Helsinki. RUNO Hotel Porvoo is in the old town of Borgå, just under an hour's drive east. Skyra Retreat is located near Rovaniemi in Finnish Lapland.

Worth the trip

The city hotels in Stockholm, Oslo, and Copenhagen fit into any big city weekend. It is the others – the fjord hotels in western Norway, Arctic Bath, Falsled Kro – that make the list worth saving. They require more planning, and several of the Norwegian establishments are only open part of the year, so check the season before you book. If you do, you will get something that no booking site will suggest.

If you only have time for one key weekend this year, choose one of the fjord hotels with two keys – and book early, as both Walaker and Storfjord are small houses with few rooms.
